The STEM Academy is a pilot school located in the Helen Bernstein High School complex on Wilton & Sunset in the heart of Hollywood. STEM serves at risk youth and teaches advanced classes in science, technology, engineering, and medicine. With state budget cuts the school has been forced to lay off teachers and double class sizes. Many of these students need additional tutoring to maintain their grades and continue to excel. Principal Paul Hirsch is looking for community volunteers who have an interest in being a student tutor for one semester to ensure their continued success. The commitment would be tutoring one student once a week for an hour and half from 3:30 – 5 p.m. for one semester. (Approx. 3 months)
Longitudinal studies have shown that the one consistent determining factor in the success of at risk youth is: “an adult who ‘cared’ met with the student for an hour a week.” Please consider investing in Hollywood’s future generation by tutoring a student this year.
