Become A Boardmember
Throughout a given year, HSDNC Board seats become available between scheduled elections (see our Governing Board page for current vacancies). According to our bylaws, open seats can be filled by majority vote of our Board.
Board appointments are only in effect until the next scheduled election.

If you’d like to be considered for an open seat, please fill out the form below (or return the printed Board application form) at least 10 days before our next Bylaws, Elections and Selection committee meeting.

After you attend our Bylaws committee meeting, you will be recommended as a candidate at the following General Board meeting. It is at the General Board meeting that you will be voted in and (if approved) fill the vacant seat you apply for.

Reasons To Get Involved
As an HSDNC Boardmember, you’ll vote on important decisions, like how we spend our annual budget, weighing-in on construction projects and demolitions, and amending the bylaws and standing rules that govern our council.
What Does The HSDNC Do?
- Advocate and represent our community’s wants and/or needs to local government officials and entities.
- Build government partnerships so that government is more responsive to stakeholder needs.
- Create a united sense of community.
- Decide how to spend the City’s annual financial allocation ($35,000 this year) for important community activities and projects.
What Are Your Responsibilities As A Boardmember?
- Participate in at least two meetings each month (the General Board meeting and a committee meeting of your choice).
- Help in outreach to community members.
- Represent our community to government officials.
- Make decisions that will affect our community.
If you want to become a HSDNC Boardmember, you must complete mandatory training within 30 days of being seated.
Wanted: Those With Skillsets
Of course, we want anybody that can commit to two meetings a month. But in particular, we’re looking for enthusiastic candidates that don’t mind rolling up their sleeves. And if you you want to sharpen your artistic or professional skills, this is a great place to build a portfolio: community organizing, web development, public relations (PR), news writing, graphic design, video production, planning and land use, event production, accounting, law, disaster response, transportation planning, etc.
Representative Seats Of The Hollywood Studio District Neighborhood Council
The HSDNC has four types of seats: Property Owners, Business Reps, At-Large, and Residential Neighborhood Reps. Most seats have two year terms, although appointments to vacated seats are only good until the next scheduled election. You must be 16 years or older to apply.
You also have to be a HSDNC “stakeholder”, defined by the City as:
“everyone who lives, works or owns real property in the neighborhood and also to those who declare a stake in the neighborhood as a community interest stakeholder, defined as a person who affirms a substantial and ongoing participation within the neighborhood council’s boundaries and who may be in a community organization such as, but not limited to, educational, non-profit and/or religious organizations”
Residential Neighborhood Reps come from each of our seven residential zones. You must live (i.e., a resident homeowner or tenant) within the corresponding zone inside the council boundaries. You’ll act as the unofficial “mayor” of your zone. You can see the HSDNC zones on our Map page.
Business Reps must own, operate, or work in a business or own business property or residential income property within the Council boundaries. This may also include organizations, education, environmental, or faith-paced organizations. There are five Business Reps.
Property Owners must be stakeholders who own real property within the HSDNC boundaries. Must be 18 years or older.
At-Large Reps have a relaxed definition: you just have to be an HSDNC stakeholder. There are four At-Large Reps.
